Tom Burris, superintendent [auth] of the Roswell Independent School District, has resigned with more than a year left on his contract and will be on administrative leave until the effective date of his resignation June 30.

At a special meeting of the RISD Board of Education Thursday night, only nine days after school board elections, the five board members, Dr. Peggy Brewer, Arturo Ibarra, Ruben Sanchez, Mona Kirk and Nicole Austin, voted unanimously to accept Burris’ resignation, to approve placing him on paid administrative leave from Feb. 16 until June 30, and to name Susan Sanchez, a former assistant superintendent, as acting superintendent.

A written statement from the board said they were grateful to Burris for his service.

“Citing a desire to spend more time with family and his eligibility for retirement, Burris entered an agreement with the RISD Board of Education that will make his resignation effective June 30, 2017,” the statement said.
