During their down time, Angeles and other students got to explore Washington, D.C., to see famous monuments and the White House.
Ariana Angeles recently traveled to George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., to attend the Washington Journalism and Media Conference.
The conference was six days and hosted speakers, tours and activities for all the high school students involved.
“I received an email saying I was nominated so I decided to go,” Angeles, 16, said.
Overall there were eight speakers including Hoda Kotb, correspondent for “Dateline NBC” and Carol Guzy, the staff photographer for The Washington Post.
“I didn’t know about photojournalism and I was interested in that,” Angeles said.
The speakers also gave advice to the students on journalism as a whole and on life, she said.
“They told us to keep fighting for what you want to do,” she said.
The conference was more than just a fun vacation, though.
“I got out of it better writing skills,” Angeles said.
