Eddy County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two people in connection with a shooting incident following the theft of a trailer and subsequent chase on June 29, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Joe Keith Smith and Robbie Morgan, both of Artesia, were arrested in connection with the crime. Smith was arrested on Saturday in Artesia without incident, and he is charged with [auth] accessory to shooting at or from a motor vehicle.
Morgan was arrested on Thursday in Dallas, Texas, by the Dallas Police Department and he is awaiting extradition back to New Mexico, according to the release. Morgan is facing charges of shooting at or from a motor vehicle.
Both charges are fourth-degree felonies.
On June 29, Morgan reported the larceny of his welder/trailer stolen from his residence. After reporting the incident, Morgan called his friend Smith. Both Smith and Morgan went to look for the trailer on their own.
A brown Dodge pickup was located in the area of Four Dinkus in which Smith pursued the truck. While pursing the truck, Morgan discharged a handgun in an attempt to stop the truck, according to police.
The incident ended at York and Main Street, where both Morgan and Smith were struck by a bullet fired at them. Both were transported to Artesia General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Smith was released and Morgan was flown to a Texas hospital for treatment.
The incident is still being investigated by the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division, according to the report.
