Dear Editor,

June 26, 2014 • Dear Editor

Our organization, the SENM Veterans Transport Network, operates on donations, contributions and grants.

The budget for gas and repairs is around $70,000 per year. Our vans are in Hobbs, Carlsbad, Artesia and Roswell. We would like to accommodate every veteran and sometimes on very special occasions, we will take a veteran to the VA hospital, providing the medical specialist is only at the VA on certain days and it is imperative to get the veteran to a special appointment. Nothing is written in stone and we are very flexible.

In light [auth] of the above statement, we would like to thank the NM Elks Lodge No. 969 for the recent golf tournament held in our behalf. The amount raised was an astounding $37,500. Our sincerest thanks go to the following: The Executive Platinum donors and the Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze donors, thank you. And to all of the other wonderful donors and golfers, a million thanks.

Not to be forgotten is the NMMI Golf Course, which placed at our disposal the entire course for the day and to Ralph Brown, who organizes and runs this every year. This is the sixth year in which this wonderful event was held in our behalf. No one can say that our local businesses and citizens are not caring and giving. We feel blessed to have this event in our honor and to live where we do.

The veterans and spouses we transport deserve the best we can give them. A small payback for the service they gave our country in time of war and peace. To all veterans we say to you, “Thank you, and God bless.”

I am very proud to be the president of this all-volunteer organization. No one is receiving pay for the work they are doing.

Last month, (May), we transported 136 Veterans and traveled 13,547 miles. We estimate that 40 percent of the veterans would not be able to get to their appointments if not for our organization. So when you see one of our vans, thank the driver for he/she is a volunteer.

Thank You.

Magil Duran,
