Hundreds of youths “landed a big one” Saturday at [auth] the 13th annual Kids Fishing Day at Walmart. Children learned about fishing, fish habitat and other essentials at the free fishing clinic sponsored by Walmart and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
Saturday was National Free Fishing Day. All anglers, residents and non-residents were able to fish free Saturday on the state’s public waters, without a fishing license or stamp.
Mark Madson of the Department of Game and Fish said 248 children ages 12 or younger registered and attended education stations Saturday at Walmart, where young anglers learned the basics of baiting hooks and tying knots.
Children learned the correct way to catch and release fish in a portable swimming pool filled with channel catfish. There were also games and hourly prize drawings.
