ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An Albuquerque police officer under investig ation for his handling of a child abuse call involving 9-year-old Omaree Varela has been suspended.
KRQE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/PBbk4J) the police department issued Officer Scott McMurrough a letter of suspension Wednesday, the same day Officer Gil Vigil was fired for his involvement.
The Albuquerque Police Officer Association says McMurrough has already begun serving his 56-hour suspension.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave in February after it was discovered that they went to Omaree’s home in June to respond to a 911 call in which a dispatcher overheard threatening and abusive comments.
The police department had said the officers never listened to the call and did not file a report.
Six months later, the boy died after his mother allegedly kicked him to death.
