After a lengthy & courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease Kay Henderson Rhodes passed peacefully away on February 27, 2014. Kay was born March 9, 1942 in Roswell, New Mexico [auth] to Loren Edward & Vera Bruton Henderson.
She graduated from Roswell High School in 1960. While in High School Kay was a Cheerleader, a Majorette, a member of the school band, & she was selected as a runner-up for class most beautiful.
After graduation she attended Texas Tech for one year & then transferred & graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1964. She & Joe Rhodes, her husband of almost 52 years, were married September 8, 1962 in Roswell, NM. After graduating Kay taught business subjects, sponsored many activities & headed the Distributive Education program at Valley High School in Albuquerque, NM, until the birth of their first child in 1970.
The family followed Joe’s career going from Albuquerque, NM; to Alderwood Manor, WA; to Yarrow Point, WA; to Town & Country, MO; to Columbine Valley, CO; to Barrington, IL & finally back to Columbine Valley in 1996, where Kay & Joe retired.
Kay was a great cook, she played the piano & also the clarinet in her HS band, she liked to read, sing, dance, travel, Broadway Shows, Holidays, & being with her family. Kay loved her family above all else. She ran the household, was a wonderful wife, a loyal friend & tremendous support to her husband.
She was a great mother who was very involved with all her children’s school & extra curricular activities. She was also beloved by all her children’s many friends. She was a very active & effective volunteer in the various communities where they lived, including: PTA Leadership positions, Volunteer class mother, Fund Raising Chairperson, Kappa, Kappa Gamma Sustainer, Junior League, Charitable work, Committee Volunteer. She belonged to several book clubs, & she played bridge & was a member of the nine hole competitive golf team at Columbine Country Club. She is a long time member of the Littleton United Methodist Church.
Kay is survived by her loving husband Joe, & her two devoted children & her four grandchildren: her son Joe Rhodes & his wife Natalie of Hoboken, NJ, & their children Josh & Luke, & her daughter Julie Leftridge & her husband Steve of Webster Groves, MO, & their children Henry & Logan. She is also survived by her brother Steve Henderson & his wife Carol Jane of Roswell, NM, her sisters-in-law Barbara Rhodes Siegal & her husband Bernie of Menlo Park, CA & Penny Rhodes Pulliam & her husband Byron of Grand Junction, CO. She has three surviving nephews Mark & Jon Henderson & Jack Siegal, & one who preceded her in death, Doug Pulliam, & five surviving nieces including Cindy Henderson Redding, Tonya Henderson Winder, Nicole Siegal Fuselier, Cari Pulliam Diehl, & Kim Pulliam Vecchio & their families, including nine great nephews & four great nieces. Kay faced the inevitability of this unforgiving disease with the same dignity & grace she displayed throughout the rest of her life. She never lost her beautiful smile, her calm demeanor or her heartfelt love for her family & friends.
She will be remembered as a kind caring person, & she will be sorely missed by her children, her family, her loving husband & many others. May God bless her soul & welcome her into his eternal care. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Sat. March 15, at the Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 S. Datura Street, Littleton, CO 80120, 303-794-6379. A reception will immediately follow at the church. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association, 455 Sherman Street, Suite 500 or to the charity of one’s choice.
