Absent New Mexico lawmaker says he’s returning pay

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico legislator says he plans to return thousands [auth] of dollars of daily expense pay that he received for the recent legislative session that he missed because of health problems.

Ep. Phillip Archuleta says he missed the 30-day session because he was recuperating from having his right leg amputated in January.

The Las Cruces Democrat tells the Las Cruces Sun-News ( ) that he’s starting therapy while staying in a rehabilitation facility in Albuquerque.

Archuleta was one of two House members who missed the session but received per-diem payments.

Archuleta says he wasn’t aware that the payments were being made until a family member alerted him.

He says he’s returning the money with a money order to the state.
