New Mexico inmate stabbed in gang attack

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico prison officials say an inmate was stabbed to death in a gang-related attack.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports ( 34-year-old Javier Enrique Molina had ties to inmates who [auth] were all part of the same gang at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility in Las Cruces.

New Mexico Corrections Department spokeswoman Alex Tomlin says Molina was stabbed just after 6 p.m. Friday in a common area where inmates play cards and watch TV.

New Mexico State Police say the assault involved several inmates. Police have not yet made any arrests but recovered a metal shank they believe was the weapon used.

Tomlin says Molina never mentioned any enemies or threats to prison staff.

Molina was serving a 13-year sentence for armed robbery, evidence tampering, escape from jail and forgery.
