SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — House Majority Leader Rick Miera says he’s not seeking re-election this year.

The Albuquerque Democrat announced his retirement plan on Friday, a day after the Legislature adjourned a [auth] 30-day session.

Miera has served in the House since 1991, and has been majority leader since last year. He was the long-time chairman of the House Education Committee before assuming the No. 2 Democratic leadership post.

Miera said in a statement he decided to retire to provide an opportunity for “a new generation of community leaders.” He will continue to serve through the end of the year.

House Speaker W. Ken Martinez of Grants described Miera as a “stalwart supporter of education.”

Candidates for the Legislature file for office on March 11.
