Cheryl Elizabeth (Mihas) Kautz was born on a U.S. Army Base in Landstuhl, Germany to Army Captain Ernest W. Mihas and Margaret C. (Greaves) Mihas. Ernest suffered an unfortunate fatal accident shortly after Cheryl’s birth. Her mother brought Cheryl and Ernest back to the U.S. soon after. Ernest was buried in Deming, NM close to his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Mihas. Years later, Margaret met and married Robert (Bob) I. Hazelwood. They adopted Cheryl’s younger sister, Johnna Kay, who survives her.
Cheryl attended the Roswell schools and graduated from Roswell High School. Shortly after her high school graduation, she attended Bauder Fashion College, in Arlington, Texas and graduated with a degree in interior design. While attending college, Cheryl lost her mother at a young age to cancer. Her stepfather, Bob Hazelwood, later married Deanna (Thomas) Whittington.
In March of 1978, Cheryl met her future husband, Robert Kautz, of Roswell. They were married on October 17th, 1978 in the First Presbyterian Church of Roswell. In June of 1999 Bob Hazelwood suffered a massive heart attack and passed on.
