Overhaul to Albuquerque police oversight eyed

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Albuquerque city councilors are set to hear recommendations from a task force to overhaul the city’s Police Oversight Commission.

The 200-page report is [auth] scheduled to be presented Monday at the Albuquerque City Council meeting and calls for changes to police training and policies.

Among other recommendations are requiring the Albuquerque police chief to respond in writing if he or she does not follow the commission’s recommendations for discipline and giving the commission more access to police documents.

The recommendations come as the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the Albuquerque Police Department over allegations of abusive force.
