Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at First Baptist Church with Howard K. Batson officiating, Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home.
Marilyn M. Cates was born on Sept. 30, 1930, in Logan, W. Va., to Goldie and Ralph Meyer. After graduating high school in Sarasota, Fla., she attended Emory Crawford Long Hospital School of Nursing. On April 28, 1950, in Dexter, she married the love of her life, Acie H. Cates Jr. They raised two daughters, Cynthia and Julie, in Roswell, and were members of First Baptist Church. When they moved to Amarillo in 1978, Marilyn became involved with church and community activities.
She taught fourth and sixth grade Sunday School classes at First Baptist Church of Amarillo for many years. Thursday Bible Study and lunch with friends was a highlight for her each week. She was strong in her Christian faith and walk. Marilyn served on the board of the Red Cross of Amarillo for five years. She played the piano beautifully, enjoyed many bridge games, and maintained a passion for reading.
After her husband’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling around the world and visiting their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her immediate family, church family, and a host of dear friends will dearly miss Marilyn.
She is survived by her husband, Acie, and their daughters: Cynthia and her husband, John Edge, of Spring, Texas, and Julie and her husband, Dr. Ronald Hargraves, of Wheeling, W. Va; four grandchildren: Amy and her husband, Joseph Gonzales, Erik Burket and his wife, Heather, Emily and her husband, David Hancock; six great-grandchildren: William Gonzales, Ava, Hudson, and Miles Burket, Lillian and George Hancock.
Family will accept friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
