He graduated from high school in Ashland, Ore., and immediately enlisted in the Army in 1935. He was transferred to the Army Air Corps and was transferred to the Air Force, when it was formed as a separate branch. He retired from the Air Force in 1962.
He married Melba Surber in December 1936. She preceded him in death in 1999. They had three children: Jerry (Karena) of Katy, Texas, Sandra, of Artesia, and Gary (Sally), of Roswell. They had six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He married Myrta Nan Vickers in 2001.
Jim was a 63-year member of Masonry, and the American Legion and also the Military Officers Association of America.
Following his wishes, there will be no services. Direct cremation has taken place and his cremains will be placed next to his wife, Melba, in South Park Cemetery.
