ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico woman has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for killing her husband with a piece of firewood.

Prosecutors said Friday that 44-year-old Bertha Damon [auth] received a 63-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release.

Damon, of Mentmore, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter last September.

Authorities say Damon and her husband of 24 years returned to their Navajo Nation home after a night of drinking and began arguing on May 21, 2011.

Damon was accused of repeatedly striking her husband on the head with a piece of firewood and prosecutors say the man died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Damon has been on conditions of release since her guilty plea. She’s required to surrender to a federal correctional facility within 60 days.
