Artesia man facing trial for death of friend

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — An Artesia man is standing trial for the 2011 shooting death of his friend.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports ( ) the second-degree murder trial for Jeff Carpenter is expected the [auth] continue next week with more witness testimony in Eddy County District Court.

Authorities say Carpenter shot 22-year-old Joseph Darras in May 2011 after the pair had run into some trouble with other men at a bar. Carpenter told authorities he and Darras had been drinking, and there was talk of getting their guns and going back to the bar to take care of the trouble.

But Carpenter says a gun Darras reached for went off accidentally.

Carpenter has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a firearm.
