ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Shiprock man has been sentenced to nearly 3 ½ years in federal prison for assaulting a man with a machete on the Navajo Nation.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Tyrell Elliot Frank [auth] received a 41-month prison term Wednesday to be followed by two years of supervised release.

Frank was accused of repeatedly striking another Navajo man with a machete on April 1, 2012.

Authorities say the victim suffered severe cuts to his back and left arm.

Frank told authorities he had been released from a hospital after being assaulted himself and struck a person he didn’t know.

Frank was later arrested and indicted on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

He pleaded guilty in August 2013 to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
