SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — San Juan County has issued its first marriage license to a same-sex couple from Aztec.
The Farmington Daily Times reports (http://bit.ly/JVz8Om) that Luciana Velasquez and Deann Toadlena were married in downtown Farmington on Thursday.
That same day, the state’s Supreme Court legalized gay marriage and ruled it was unconstitutional to deny marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia now allow same-sex weddings.
Velasquez says the couple has been in a relationship for eight years and that a legally recognized marriage will put an end to many obstacles she and Toadlena have faced in recent years.
