FRUITLAND, N.M. (AP) — San Juan County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a crash in northwestern New Mexico that killed two people and injured two others, including an infant.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Beth Utley says the crash happened before dawn Friday when a pickup truck heading east crossed the U.S. 64 median and struck an SUV that was carrying two adults and the 5-month-old girl.
The 40-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to a Farmington hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 37-year-old driver of the SUV and his 20-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
The infant was flown to an Albuquerque hospital, where she was listed in critical but stable condition. Utley says medical personnel are optimistic the girl will survive.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Preliminary reports indicate alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
