LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — U.S. Border Patrol agents have seized nearly $160,000 worth of marijuana in two separate drug busts over the holiday weekend in southern New Mexico.
In the first case, Deming agents followed footsteps through the desert that led to two juveniles who were hiding in the brush. They were in the country illegally and carrying backpacks of marijuana.
Agents seized four burlap sacks of marijuana weighing more than 150 pounds. The estimated value was nearly $122,000.
Closer to Las Cruces, agents discovered 44 sealed bags of marijuana in a rental car that was stopped at a border checkpoint. The 47 pounds of drugs were worth more than $37,000.
Agents also found cash in the car.
The driver was arrested and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration in Las Cruces.
