ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities have released the identity of an Albuquerque police officer who shot a man during a traffic stop after police say the suspect confronted the officer with a gun.

[auth] The Albuquerque Police Department says Officer Peter Romero was the officer who was involved in Friday’s shooting.

Romero has worked for the police department for 18 years.

Police say Romero wasn’t injured.

The unidentified suspect was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police say the suspect was pulled over, got out of the vehicle and confronted the officer.

The incident was the latest in a series of officer-involved shootings in New Mexico’s largest city that has brought scrutiny to police for their use of force practices and the sixth involving Albuquerque officers this year.
