NM man pleads guilty to assaulting girlfriend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico man has pleaded guilty to assaulting his pregnant girlfriend with a knife, a stick and a rock.

Prosecutors say 40-year-old Tayah Edwards pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony charges [auth] of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and domestic assault by a habitual offender.

Under terms of a plea agreement, Edwards will be sentenced to 70 months in federal prison followed by supervised release.

Authorities say Edwards, of Cudei, was arrested soon after the Aug. 20 assault on the Navajo Nation.

His girlfriend suffered a compound fracture to her left leg, a large scalp laceration and multiple contusions.

Authorities say the woman was 35 weeks pregnant at the time of the assault and Edwards struck her in the head and face numerous times with a stick and a rock.
