Bus carrying Gallup track team hits cow

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (AP) — Members of the Gallup track team were briefly stranded after their school bus collided with a cow on a highway near Los Lunas.

Police say the crash happened Friday night. Officers arrived [auth] to find a dead cow, the school bus and a car with major damage.

No one on the bus was hurt, but the driver of the car was transported to a local hospital with injuries.

Lt. Vince Torres says the car hit the cow first as it was walking in the westbound lane of State Road 6. The cow flipped over the top of the car and into the path of the bus.

Torres says the cow slid under the bus and brought it to a halt, causing damage to the undercarriage. Arrangements were made to get the team to its final destination.
