Police in NM identify robbery-carjacking suspect

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities have identified a man shot by Albuquerque police after he allegedly robbed a woman and tried to steal a vehicle from another person at gunpoint.

Police say 34-year-old [auth] Joaquin Ortega remained hospitalized Tuesday, but will be booked into jail after he’s released.

They say he’s facing charges of armed robbery, child abuse, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer.

Police say Ortega is a convicted felon and also is facing federal charges in connection with Monday’s incident.

Ortega was shot about 4:45 p.m. after allegedly crashed a car along Central Avenue, robbing a woman who was with her 6-year-old son and then attempted to carjack another person.

Police say the officer involved in the shooting wasn’t injured.
