The Roswell Police Dep[auth] artment released the name of Detective Sergeant Steve Meredith, who was injured on Monday while assisting New Mexico State Police after an officer involved shooting. He was hit by a pickup that was rear-ended by a commercial vehicle resulting in a multi-car pile up near mile marker 90 on US 285 South. The driver of the pickup died after being struck.

Meredith, a 17-year veteran with the department, was flown out of state for treatment of his injuries. The police say he is making great strides in his recovery. A private entity has started a fund at Pioneer Bank to help the family pay the medical bills.

Public Information Liaison Sabrina Morales said that those interested in donating to the fund can go to any Pioneer Bank location in Roswell, Hobbs, Las Cruces, Alamogordo and Ruidoso.

Amy Davis Moody said people do not have to specify Meredith by name; all they have to mention is the Roswell police officer or the injured officer, and bank employees will know where to direct the funds.

The Meredith family is grateful for the outpouring of prayers, support, and well-wishes they have received from people of the community. They and the Roswell Police Department also want to thank the following agencies who assisted Sgt. Meredith and attended to his injuries during the tragic incident, including: Native Air, Roswell Fire Department, New Mexico State Police, Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Lubbock Police Department, Dexter Medical Unit and Texas Parks Department.
