1 dead after accident at NM highway barricade

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — A woman is dead and a Roswell police officer is critically injured in the wake of an accident after a shootout along a highway in southern New Mexico.

The Roswell Daily Record [auth] reported ( ) Tuesday a multi-car accident occurred as officials set up road blocks after Monday morning’s shooting along US 285.

New Mexico State Police say a commercial vehicle driving southbound plowed into a pickup truck, which caused a chain reaction with two more cars.

The driver of the pickup, Rose Becerra, 39, struck a police sergeant and a median strip. Becerra, of Lake Arthur, was airlifted to a hospital where she died.

The unidentified sergeant is in critical condition.

Earlier Monday, authorities were engaged in a four-mile chase and shootout with Christoval Quintana, 30, who was fatally shot.
