During the Veterans Stand Down event on Oct. 25 at the Boys & Girls Club, La Puerta Abierta will be handing out bags of much-needed items to all homeless veterans in Roswell. To do this, we need help with donations. Items must be new. You can drop off the donations at La Puerta Abierta, 809 W. Alameda St. Stop by or call 625-6975 for more information. All donations are tax-deductible through Embrace, Inc. Examples of items needed include: one-gallon Ziploc bags, nail files, Band Aids, sanitizer, bar soap, shampoo, breakfast bars, socks, Pecos Trails bus tokens, sugar-free gum, deodorant, tea bags, floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes (with holders), hair combs, water, hand lotion and small cans of food with pop tops, to name a few.
Free computer classes
Senior citizens (50 and above) in Chaves County are invited to enroll in free basic computer classes offered by the Chaves County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in partnership with Eastern New Mexico University- Roswell. Four classes will be available over the next several months. The classes will be held on Oct. 26, Nov. 16, Jan. 18, and Feb. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon. Sean Davis, RSVP program director, will teach the classes, which will be held in the Instructional Technology Center, room 107 at 23 W. Mathis on the ENMU-Roswell campus. Bus shuttle service will be available to those interested in a free ride to the campus. The ENMU-Roswell bus will leave from the Roswell Convention and Civic Center (912 N. Main St.) parking lot at 8:30 a.m. on each class day. When the class is finished, the bus will drive seniors back from the campus to the Civic Center parking lot. To enroll in any of the classes and reserve a space on the bus, call Davis at 623-3960. Each class size is limited to 24 students.
