NM police rescue shoplifting suspect from arroyo

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Police in Albuquerque have rescued a [auth] shoplifting suspect who fell into a fast-moving arroyo while trying to flee.

Officers were dispatched to the K-Mart on reports of a shoplifting incident Sunday night.

They reportedly chased 32-year-old Fernando Garcia toward the arroyo, which was full of fast-moving water after recent rainfall.

Garcia fell into the arroyo and was swept away. But police ran alongside, never losing sight of the man.

Police say Garcia was eventually able to grab hold of debris and officers pulled him to safety using a flotation device from a nearby motel swimming pool.

Garcia was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Police say he’s facing charges of misdemeanor shoplifting and criminal damage to property.
