SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico storm victims are warned to be on the watch for scammers falsely soliciting money to help storm victims in their state and [auth] neighboring Colorado.

The Attorney General’s Office says it’s common after natural disasters for scam artists to make appeals that turn out to just be attempts to prey on sympathies.

The office urges residents to donate to known and trusted charities and to be wary of those that seem to have sprung up overnight.

Other tips include asking questions of callers and to not give out credit card or other information unless a charity is known to be reputable.
