ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — The city of Alamogordo is moving closed to legalizing beekeeping.
The Alamogordo Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/17WXfUu) that the city commission took steps this week to approve an ordinance that will allow citizens to keep bee hives on properties of a certain size.
A proposed bill will require beekeepers to register their hives with the city and notify neighbors of their plans.
Proponents of the law say it will help dilute the population of aggressive “Africanized” bees that have been identified in Alamogordo.
Opponents say that the ordinance will endanger people with bee venom allergies.
