LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Enrollment at New Mexico State University is down for the fall semester.
School officials say about 28,000 students across all campuses were enrolled as of Sept. 6.
That’s a drop of more than 5 percent from this time last year.
NMSU’s main campus in Las Cruces has about 16,700 students, a decrease of 5 percent from last fall.
School officials say they expected our enrollment to be down at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
They say there are fewer incoming freshmen, which can be attributed to a decrease of high school graduates in New Mexico and the improving economy.
NMSU officials say the number of high school graduates in the state is expected to increase over the next five years.
