Carlsbad teen arrested in fatal shooting of cousin

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — A 12-year-old Carlsbad boy died late Wednesday after he was accidently shot by his teenage cousin, police said.

According to Carlsbad police, the 15-year-old boy thought he had cleared the handgun before he pulled the trigger [auth] about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the front yard of the victim’s home.

The teen told police that his cousin had pointed a toy pistol at him before he shot him with a .380 handgun.

Police say the 12-year-old boy, later identified as Jeremy Hatfield, suffered a single gunshot wound to his abdomen and was taken to Carlsbad Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus ( ) reports that the teen allegedly hid the gun and the spent casing under his cousin’s house after the shooting.

The teen was charged with involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of a handgun. He’s being held at the Eddy County Juvenile Detention Center.
