NM 1st grader suspended when gun found in backpack

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Albuquerque Public School officials say a first grade student has been suspended after a loaded gun was found in his backpack.

KOB-TV reports ( the incident occurred Wednesday morning [auth] at Helen Cordero Elementary School.

The 7-year-old student reportedly told a friend and a teacher he had a weapon in his backpack.

The teacher looked in the backpack and found a loaded semi-automatic Glock.

School officials say the student didn’t indicate that he was going to use the gun and it’s unclear how he got the weapon.

They say a letter was sent home to parents of students, saying the boy could face long term suspension or expulsion as well as legal action.

The name of the boy wasn’t released.
