LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — The mayor of Las Cruces says he has applied for a vacant Dona Ana County manager position.

Ken [auth] Miyagishima said Friday he submitted his application and feels he has the experience for the job.

The 50-year-old Democrat said he would step down as mayor if selected. He has two years left in his term as mayor.

In 1992, he became New Mexico’s first American of Japanese descent to be elected to public office when he won a race county commissioner.
