HOBBS, N.M. (AP) — Police say two teenagers are in stable condition after being hit by a vehicle while walking along a sidewalk in Hobbs.

Police spokesman Mike Stone [auth] says the two 14-year-old boys were walking in the 1100 block of East Broadway on Tuesday evening when they were struck by a sedan.

Investigators say the driver, identified as 26-year-old Esteban Alvarez, had fallen asleep at the wheel. He veered off the south side of the road and drove over the curb and onto the sidewalk.

Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Stone says charges against Alvarez are pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
