Dinner to honor Jenning

An appreciation dinner and roast will be held for former State Sen. Tim Jennings, Aug. 22.

“It’s an important thing to recognize Tim for what he’s done,” said his niece, Jacqueline Hyatt. “He’s an exceptional public servant who, I think, is unmatched in New Mexico’s recent history.”

All proceeds from the event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico.

“The only way he would consent to it, was if kids would benefit,” said Diane Taylor.

BBBS of Southeastern New Mexico matches adults with children. By providing this service, the children are [auth] given positive role models, “to show them different things in life than what they are shown,” said Bill Wolf, chief executive officer of the organization.

Jennings was first appointed in July 1978. Before that, he served as a Commissioner for Chaves County from 1975 to 1978.

Jennings, a democrat, represented District 32. He was well-known and respected. He was defeated by Republican Cliff Pirtle in November.

In January, nearly two-dozen legislators from both parties spent an hour in an emotional farewell to Jennings after he chaired his last meeting of the Legislative Council.

“Tim didn’t serve party politics,” Taylor said. “He served the people. He’s a dying breed. He’s a good, honest, decent man.”

Jennings lost his wife to cancer in 2009. Since then, he has made a special effort to reach out to others affected by cancer, Hyatt said. Jennings keeps a collection of hats and gives them away to people who have cancer. He also writes emails to people who he knows are struggling.

“It’s little things like that, that he does,” she said.

Jennings, who studied business and agriculture, continues to manage the family ranch. He is also still involved in advocating for education, economic development and health care issues for the community, Hyatt said.

The appreciation dinner and roast will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Roswell Civic Center, 912 N. Main St.
