The Roswell Police Department contacted New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department about a lost/abandoned child during the Church on the Move’s “Family First” event at Cielo Grande Park on Saturday.
Officers were called to the park by the Roswell Fire Department after a firefighter found a 4-year-old child in the parking lot who appeared dehydrated and had ants crawling on the child’s skin.
The child had been left without adult supervision. The firefighter took the child to a safe location and contacted event coordinators.
Announcements were made in an attempt to locate the parents. After thirty minutes without response, the police were brought in.
About 20 minutes after the police arrived, another young child, the sibling of the first, was also found alone. An hour later, volunteers located the mother of the two children.
According to the RPD, the mother did not appear concerned about her children’s absence. She was unaware one of the youngsters had been missing for more than an hour. When questioned by authorities, she stated she had not been worried because it was a family event.
At this time, no charges have been filed against the mother.
