Children left unattended during Family First event

The Roswell Police Department contacted New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department about a lost/abandoned child during [auth] the Church on the Move’s “Family First” event at Cielo Grande Park on Saturday.

Officers were called to the park by the Roswell Fire Department after a firefighter found a 4-year-old child in the parking lot who appeared dehydrated and had ants crawling on the child’s skin.

The child had been left without adult supervision. The firefighter took the child to a safe location and contacted event coordinators.

Announcements were made in an attempt to locate the parents. After thirty minutes without response, the police were brought in.

About 20 minutes after the police arrived, another young child, the sibling of the first, was also found alone. An hour later, volunteers located the mother of the two children.

According to the RPD, the mother did not appear concerned about her children’s absence. She was unaware one of the youngsters had been missing for more than an hour. When questioned by authorities, she stated she had not been worried because it was a family event.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the mother.

    It is a family event but its also not COTM’s duty to take care of children they do enough monitoring all the games blow up jumpers. it should have been her duty to keep n eye on her kids for this event is very big and awesome, well all we can do is pray that nothing happens but the way she answered the officers questions seems like she didn’t care about where her kids were…

    Really, Mom? You didn’t know where the kids were? Why would anyone let kids wander off for this length of time without hunting for them? Another case of a lazy, negligent parent expecting someone else to do her job. Shame on you. Thanks to the fireman for showing concern for the child.
