ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Deputy Chief Allen Banks will become the Albuquerque Police Department’s interim chief upon Chief Ray Schultz’s Aug. 3 retirement.
The city announced in March that Schultz will retire this year after [auth] 31 years on the force. He became Albuquerque’s police chief in 2005.
Mayor Richard Berry says a decision on a permanent replacement until well after the Oct. 8 municipal election.
Banks is a 21-year veteran of the Albuquerque department and he’s been deputy chief since 2009.
He says he hasn’t decided whether he’ll apply for the chief’s position, but he said during Thursday’s news conference announcing the transition that he feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve as interim chief.
Schultz retires in the midst of a federal investigation into APD officers’ use of force.
