Tom was born in Floyd County, Ky. in Emma, Ky., on Dec. 5, 1926, to Robert Lee Woods and Virgie Sellards Woods. He is the third born of seven children: The oldest sister, Stella Mae Woods family; brother Waller J. Woods and younger siblings, Geraldine Woods, Jeanne Woods, Robert L. Woods Jr., and the youngest Kenneth P. Woods in California. His father, mother, and all siblings except Kenneth preceded him in death.
He was inducted into the Army at age 18 and served until retirement in 1973. While serving in the Army in Bamberg, Germany, near Nurnberg, he met and married Marion Kelsch on Nov. 3, 1950. They had three children, Linda R. Woods Fetters (George) of Palmdale, Calif., Nancy A. Woods Bradberry of Lancaster, Calif., Tyrone Y. Woods (Marge) of Roswell; and two grandsons, David R. Fetters and Jesse R. Bradberry. All three children are school teachers. Tom served in three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam during his military career. Having traveled all over the world, including a two-year assignment in Taipei, Taiwan, and one-year assignment in Vietnam at the height of the war, he spent most of the U.S. assignments in New Mexico. Upon retirement from the Army, he was employed by New Mexico Military Institute as a training and control officer. After two years at this position, he was promoted to the position of adjutant (assistant to the commandant) and remained in that position until retirement in 1982 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Since then he has spent the rest of his life with beloved wife, Marion, dividing their time at their home in Clovis and their lake house at Conchas Dam, where he enjoyed fishing, camping and boating, as well as traveling to all parts throughout the U.S. and to some foreign countries.
