BERNALILLO, N.M. (AP) — A former Albuquerque police officer accused of fatally shooting his wife opened his own bank account about a month before her death.

Jurors on Friday heard an audio deposition from Levi [auth] Chavez, who is on trial for murder.

According to the deposition, Chavez received his first Social Security deposit of benefits less than 10 days after his 26-year-old wife’s death in 2007.

Chavez is accused of shooting Tera Chavez with his department-issued gun at their Los Lunas home and then trying to make her death look like a suicide.

Albuquerque police detective Heather Chavez married Levi Chavez in July 2008.

She also took the witness stand Friday.

KOB-TV says Heather Chavez testified that she attended Tera Chavez’s funeral and became intimate with Levi Chavez a couple months later.
