Murder trial resumes for ex-Albuquerque policeman

BERNALILLO, N.M. (AP) — The murder trial of a former Albuquerque police officer accused of killing his wife has entered third week of testimony with a close friend of the victim taking the stand.

Samantha [auth] Wheeler testified Monday that Tera Chavez “was ready to move on” in the last months of her life.

Prosecutors claim Levi Chavez shot 26-year-old Tera Chavez with his department-issued gun in 2007 at their Los Lunas home and then tried to make her death look like a suicide.

They allege Chavez killed his wife in part because she discovered he staged the theft of their truck for insurance money. The two were also having extramarital affairs.

The Albuquerque Journal reports ( Tera Chavez told Wheeler in August 2007 that she had been having an affair with Wheeler’s husband.
