CIMARRON, N.M. (AP) — A wildfire in northern New Mexico has prompted about 100 Boy Scouts to relocate to another camping area within the Philmont Scout Ranch as a precaution.
State Forestry officials say the Whites [auth] Peak Fire has charred between 900 and 1,000 acres as of Friday afternoon.
The lightning-caused fire began Thursday morning in a remote forested area of private land about 14 miles southwest of Cimarron and 3 miles south of Philmont’s border.
The fire is 5 percent contained and crews are working to keep the flames from crossing onto the Philmont. They are also protecting a power line that’s a quarter-mile from the fire.
Air tankers are dropping retardant to slow the spread of the flames.
Officials say the fire showed little significant growth Friday thanks to lower temperatures and higher humidity.
