Bob arrived in Roswell in 1956 as an employee of Lester Humphrey Pest Control. [auth] He was a kind man and always lived his strong Christian beliefs. He was gifted in the art of public relations and loved his work with the public. He soon began to build a client base in New Mexico and West Texas. He worked for Lester for 12 years calling on customers who had never had the availability of pest management. He became very popular in the community as a professional and true pioneer in the field of pest management. Having obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration, he always had the entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to build his own business. He honored a three-year non-compete agreement, working as a bread deliveryman while building more relationships and gaining friends.
He and his beloved wife Patsy finally started Bob Reed Pest Control Service in 1971. A family business was born. Bob’s clients and friends were glad to have his services again. Three years later, his son Mike joined the company when he was old enough to drive a truck. Selling pest management was very hard in the early days. He would often trade his services to small grocery stores up and down the Pecos Valley for bread and lunchmeat or food of any kind to help the store owners and feed his family at the same time. There were no laws and regulations on pest management at that time and he said that his conscience was the law. His son returned from college in 1979 and Bob incorporated the business into Bob Reed Pest Control Inc. in 1981. He provided many jobs for countless employees over the years and to them he was appreciative. Bob finally retired from active pest management work at the age of 85. Bob built a company from nothing but hard work, determination, kindness and professionalism. That family company lives on today.
Bob is survived by his son Mike Reed and his wife Gregi; his grandchildren, Robert Buie, Tina Vaughn and her husband Allen, of Virginia, and Justin Baber, of Arizona; and great-grandchildren, Seth, Ava and Cora Vaughn. He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy Ruth Reed; his daughter Jamie Buie; and two brothers and six sisters.
