AZTEC, N.M. (AP) — Authorities have identified former Aztec Mayor Michael Arnold as the pilot who was killed when his single-engine plane crashed on takeoff at an airport in northwestern New Mexico.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Lynn says the crash Saturday around 11 a.m. at the Aztec Airport.
The 62-year-old Arnold was the only person on board. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s not immediately clear what caused the crash. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were en route.
Arnold had served as mayor from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2004 to 2008. He was also the manager of the airport.
