MAYHILL, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say they don’t know what caused a 26-year-old firefighter to collapse and die while working on a forest project in southern New Mexico.
Lincoln National Forest officials announced the death of Daniel Davidson on Tuesday. They say he died Sunday afternoon despite efforts to revive him after he collapsed.
Davidson and two crew members of the Sacramento Ranger District’s Engine 621 had been working near Mayhill.
Acting forest supervisor Tom Mulder says employees are like family and are grieving “this tragic loss.”
Davidson was an E4 Specialist with the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Infantry Division. He had served two tours in Afghanistan and was hired as an engine crew member in April.
Davidson had a 6-year-old son, and he and his fiance were expecting a daughter in July.
Funeral services are pending.
