PORTALES — Funeral services for Buck L. Wilson, 97, currently of Roswell, will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Central Christian Church, with Kenneth Broad officiating, assisted by Don Thomas. Burial will follow in Portales Cemetery, with Carl J. Foley Jr., Robbie Cranford, Robert N. Isbell, Boaz E. Easley, Brent H. Wilson, Grant L. Wilson, John Bridges and Sammy Ellison serving as pallbearers. Buck W. Easley, Kevin W. Wilson, his great-grandsons and all of his railroad buddies will be honorary pallbearers.
Buck L. Wilson was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, [auth] to the home of Daisy (Keenan) and Manzo Harvey Wilson, and died in Roswell on April 22, 2013. Mr. Wilson was orphaned, and lived in an orphanage in Council Bluffs for about two years, before he and another young man left to make their way in the world. They were in New Orleans when a ship’s captain offered them jobs. They worked aboard ship and sailed around the Horn, and ended up on the West Coast. From there they worked their way up to Alaska and back, taking jobs along the way. He eventually ended up in Fairview, Okla.
It was in Fairview that he met Miss Josie Chaloupek, and they were married on May 16, 1936. About 1940, Mr. Wilson went to work on the railroad, and in 1942 took a job with the Santa Fe Railroad. He moved to Belen at that time and lived there several years before being transferred to Clovis. In 1977, he moved to Portales. Mr. Wilson retired after more than 40 years as an engineer.
He was a faithful Christian man, and a longtime member of the Central Christian Church. He loved to hunt and fish and prospect for gold. Mr. Wilson also enjoyed gardening and growing things. For several years, he and his son owned and operated Wilson Nursery, where they grew and sold all varieties of pine and cedar trees. Buck also liked reading and playing cards.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Dr. Buck and Roberta Wilson, of Portales; his two daughters, Dorothy Jo Meaders and Fae Foley, both of Roswell; a daughter-in-law Judy Wilson, of Caballo; grandsons, Brent (Debbie) Wilson, Kevin Wilson, Grant (Shawna) Wilson, Robert (Cindy) Isbell, Buck W. (Ginger) Easley, Carl J. (Cherish) Foley Jr., Boaz Eli (Tina) Easley, Jerry Autrey, Tim (Espie) Crosswhite, and Justin (Brooke) Lee; granddaughters, Mary D. (Kenneth) DiPerna, Kristynne L. (Robbie) Cranford, Julie D. (John) Bridges, Kara E. (Sammy) Ellison, Jinah Autrey, Lanae (Johnnie) Gibson and LaDawn (Jim) Collins; 43 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren, with one due on Thursday, April 24, 2013; one foster sister Donna Fae (G.W.) Woodie, of Grove, Okla.; brothers-in-law, Clyde (Violet) Chaloupek of Fairview, Okla., Larry (Pat) Chaloupek, of Cherryille, Kan.; a sister-in-law Virgie Chaloupek, of Beaver, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Charlotte Rose and Mary Elizabeth; a son Franz H. Wilson; a grandson Matthew J.L. Foley; a daughter-in-law Florence Wilson; two foster sisters, Darline Eubanks and Willa Dean Tripp; and by Josie Wilson, his wife of more than 66 years, who died Oct. 5, 2002.
