Bear euthanized after dumped into trash compactor

RATON, N.M. (AP) — Authorities in New Mexico say an adult black [auth] bear has been euthanized after it was unknowingly dumped into a trash compaction truck.

New Mexico Game and Fish officials say the bear was in a large curbside trash container that was dumped into the compactor last Thursday.

The truck was taken to a Raton landfill where sanitation workers saw the bear emerge from the trash pile.

Authorities say the bear was injured from the ordeal and Game and Fish officers were called out to euthanize the animal.

Game and Fish officials say bears get into trash containers looking to find food and sometimes use them for daytime nap hideaways.

They say Raton officials are working to somehow make the trash containers bear-proof in the future.
