LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) — St[auth] ate police say two people are dead and six other are injured following a drunken driving crash along Interstate 25 in northern New Mexico.
Police Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez says the crash happened at about 2 a.m. Saturday south of Las Vegas. Officers responded and found a car flipped over in the median. The driver and seven passengers had been ejected.
Police say 14-year-old Kayla Martinez of Las Vegas and 12-year-old Aleandra Sanchez of Villanueva were pronounced dead.
The others were taken to area hospitals. One of the passengers, 21-year-old Rubio Reyes, remains in critical condition.
Police accuse the 17-year-old driver of being under the influence of liquor.
Gutierrez says once the teen is released from the hospital, he will be taken into custody. He’ll face charges of vehicular homicide, DWI, reckless driving and failure to render aid.
