Vado man arrested on auto burglary charge

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A Vado man has been arrested after authorities say he broke into a truck in search of weapons to protect himself from wild dogs.

The [auth] Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Julio Barrera had spotted a knife and a BB gun inside a white pickup truck Saturday. Authorities say he took the weapons but left behind his cell phone.

The owner of the truck called police.

Deputies say they traced the phone back to Barrera, who confirmed it belonged to him and admitted to taking the weapons. He told deputies the pack of dogs eventually disappeared.

Barrera was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
