City Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Roswell Parks and Recreation Depatment, 1101 W. 4th St., to discuss renaming the Spring River Golf Course to honor acclaimed golfer Nancy Lopez.
Raised in Roswell, Lopez learned how to golf from her father, Domingo “Sunday” Lopez, at the course.
At age 12, Nancy won the New Mexico Women’s Amateur title, and continued to amass numerous awards and accomplishments, despite racial and gender barriers. In 1987, the Ladies Professional Golf Association inducted Lopez into its Hall of Fame.
Committee Chairman Dusty Huckabee said Lopez “changed the world of women’s athletics.”He said the name change would honor Lopez’s legacy and be good for the city as well.
